Mayor and Patron Message
2009 Message from the Mayor
The Kelmscott area has an ancient history and a proud heritage spanning thousands of years, from the Noongar people to the cultural mix that is modern day Kelmscott.
Kelmscott’s story began thousands of years ago when it was called Goolamrup and was home to the Noongar people. The Noongar’s lives were intrinsically linked to the land and the cycles of the seasons. 180 years after the arrival of the first European settlers, Goolamrup is now called Kelmscott and human history continues to evolve.
The one constant in the history of the area is the close ties with the land by the people that live in and around Kelmscott. The Kelmscott Annual Show is a reminder to pause in our busy modern lives and reflect on the traditions and history of the area.
Whilst the show celebrates the rich agricultural heritage of the area which has been forged over time, it is important that we also remember and honour the more ancient history of the land. The history of mankind is one of continual change and evolution and the history of Kelmscott mirrors this.
In any place, it is the people who create the community. The people of Kelmscott can all be proud of the vibrant and beautiful suburb they live and work in. Ongoing development and investment across the region means Kelmscott can face the future with confidence and verve.

2009 Message from the Patron
Long live the Kelmscott Annual Show In an era of constant change it is remarkable that we are now enjoying the 111th Kelmscott Annual Show.
As our city grows it is more important than ever to keep in touch with the plants and animals that feed and clothe us and celebrate the survival of agriculture in our region. In city life we can easily be disconnected from food production – many city kids don’t know milk comes from cows. The Kelmscott Annual Show is a celebration of the agricultural pursuits. It gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy the livestock, to celebrate traditional rural skills such as log-chopping and to encourage those who are growing fruit and vegetables, baking cakes and scones and making beer and wine.
It is a fabulous community event bringing city and country together and making our life that little bit richer.
